Green Hills Arts – until September 2, 2023

Green Hill Arts is presenting an exhibition of work by Brendan Barry, photographer, educator and camera builder. He photographed wildflowers, collected on morning walks with his daughter during the first lockdown, and developed them using two distinct analogue processes – one a simple paper negative, the other a complex colour reversal process that he has developed over the last five years.  The work touches on themes of family, reconnecting with nature, exploration of personal space and appreciating one’s immediate surroundings. His creative practice combines elements of construction, education, performance and participation.

Speaking to Brendan “Each image is unique, captured directly onto photographic paper. The process is long and laborious and the photographs hard to achieve, it can take up to 8 hours to create a successful exposure. As the ambient temperature in the room shifts, the colour balance fluctuates, and the chemical concentration changes so too does the resultant image meaning no two images will ever look the same.”

Brendan will be building a Camera Obscura in the gallery to reveal the process that captured Flowers with Bea and engaging the audience with some of photography’s transformative magic during a workshop. Places on this are available to book now.

Since 2005 Metro Imaging and the Royal College of Art have offered a one year bespoke Mentorship Award which has supported graduates as they continue their creative journey.

This year the competition was incredibly high with a record number of students participating. We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s awards are Yiming Zhu and Lina A.

Yiming Zhu （b.1999) is an artist based in London and Guangzhou. She is studying photography at Royal College Art, UK. Her practice combines installation and moving images on the basis of photography. Her work starts from reality and focuses on the relationship between consciousness and human behaviour. How to express life experiences in a metaphorical way is the focus of her work. Through fictional memory elements, subconscious metaphors and imagination to form internal and external transformations, the audience is invited into a constructed visual narrative.

Lina A. is a multimedia artist, born in Russia in 2000, currently based in London, UK. Lina’s practice explores the notion of cultural politics of emotions through fragmentation of identities and interchanging points of view. Based around language, landscape, and archives, her imagery reveals bleak Eastern European sites and deals with the contrast of both homely and unwelcoming places and narratives.

The award is recognised as an important programme in support of UK based arts education. The scheme offers one to one practical experiential in lab sessions with some of the worlds top technicians and printers; Professional Development evaluation and advice together with Marketing, networking and Social Media profiling. Metro Imaging has for many years collaborated with the FREE RANGE Graduate showcase at Truman Brewery and this year we return with two Graduate Mentorship Awards.

Metro Imaging established it’s mentorship programme in 2005, the platform has delivered hundreds of bespoke mentoring opportunities via academic and non-academic pathways. Mentees are supported as they make the next steps with practical in studio experiential learning; access to some of the UK’s top technicians and printers; introductions to industry professionals; as well as support in Social Media and Professional Development. The scheme is widely recognized as a meaningful and impactful support network for emerging talent.

Metro is proud to announce that this years winners are Jade Weir from University of Central Lancashire and Tiago Valeiro from University of Porstmouth. Both students were selected from a judging panel that toured this year’s showcases and very much look forward to welcoming them onto the platform .
